For many centuries since the middle ages, the so-called “theory of justified war” has functioned as a mental model behind real political actions.
In the first part of the workshop, we will look at the reasons of the old theory: how to judge them from a present point of rational view, are these reasons really good reasons? In the second part of the workshop, we will search for possibilities of non-violent steps to peace.
Erasmus of Rotterdam showed in his essay “querula pacis” an alternative way of thinking about war, explained by Prof. Thomas Nauerth in his talk on Saturday. This workshop, “How to handle the theory of justified war today?”, will consider the background of this on one side, and the consequences on the other side.
