Cusanus on PEACE between Religions and Cultures – Can it be a model for today?
In his early approach on tolerance and peace between religions and cultures the German philosopher and theologian Nicolaus Cusanus discusses the differences and the unity of world religions and cultures in order to foster a better understanding between peoples. This may have been influenced by Islam and Asian models of negative theology. His notion of truth (“coincidence of opposites”) and perspectivity seems to be very modern for today’s understanding between religions. It will be shown how traditions of negative theology in Judaism, Christianity and Islam and even in Eastern religions form a strong communality (“una religio in ritu diversitate”) and may be a bridge for better understanding between religions and cultures.
